Formula, assumptions and check example

A rule set combines product type, season, handfeel and yarn family to return a starting gauge and yarn-count direction for swatch planning.

Calculation logic

  • Chunky or winter selections route to 3–5 gauge for garments; fine or summer selections route to 12–16 gauge; other inputs use the balanced 7–12 gauge route.

Assumptions and limits

  • Gauge and count ranges are discussion starters, not machine specifications.
  • Stitch structure, ply, twist, yarn bulk and finishing must be validated with a physical swatch.

Worked check

A transitional pullover with balanced handfeel and a wool/cashmere blend returns a 7–12 gauge starting range and Nm 2/26 to 2/48 direction.
